Pacific High School Graduation Ceremony, Port Orford, Oregon (sourced from Facebook)

Oregon GEAR UP is a seven-year federally-funded initiative that offers academic, college and career programming to prepare low-income, rural students to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Interested in learning more about students’ experiences after they graduate from high school, Oregon GEAR UP retained Metis Associates to conduct a Life after High School survey with one of their graduating cohorts. Our study provides important information on what motivates students to pursue or not pursue a college education, their successes and struggles in their first year after graduation, their perceptions around the helpfulness of the various supports they received while in high school, and suggestions on what schools could do to better prepare them for success.
